About Us

Teatro da Terra is a non-profit entity, legally constituted as a limited liability cooperative. Founded in 2009 by Maria João Luís (performing arts professional since 1985) in the Artistic Direction and Pedro Domingos (performing arts professional since 1988) in Administrative and Financial Management. Both accumulate several functions in the structure, from staging, programming, interpretation, production direction, technical direction, lighting design, among others. It is therefore, with a vast curriculum of more than three decades dedicated to theater, that the creation of Teatro da Terra was decided. Between 2009 and 2019, it was based in the Alto Alentejo region, where it left its mark on the community and gained national recognition, particularly in the format of the work processes and in the aesthetic personality that is very specific to each theatrical creation. The development of artistic creation in close complicity with local and regional cultural agents was characterized by the integration of actors, musicians and other artists in the professional space and time of theatrical creation.

The artistic project carries, in its essence, a democratic transversality in the citizen's access to varied artistic expressions, through the itinerancy of productions, and also by converging age, ethnic, regional, political, gender or other differences, in the practical exercise of citizenship linked to the Art. The activity plans based on diversity maintain the option for the best classic texts in a spirit of renewal and re-interpretation. Support for the contemporary creation of new texts also involves editing but also publishing them in physical books, the originals in Portuguese, without forgetting the children and youth audience, where the seed is left for the audiences of the future. The book edition of several original texts for theater and the company's more than four dozen theatrical creations, affirm Teatro da Terra as a national reference for contemporary creation, characterized as a pivotal articulator of an informal network of partners between municipal, national and regional theaters. or companies of independent initiative, spread across the country. The early awakening of interest in the company's artistic work enabled the co-production, tour and exchange of various creations, also with a view to financial sustainability and the profitability of the scarce available resources.

Universal authors as important as Federico Garcia Lorca, Georges Feydeau, Karl Valentin, Molière, William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett, Heinrich Von Kleist, Anton Tchékhov, Eugène Labiche, Maurice Maeterlinck, Lewis Carroll, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Charles Dickens, or the nationals António José da Silva, Nuno Milagre, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Herberto Helder, João Monge, Romeu Correia, Carlos de Oliveira, among others, occupy prominent places in the company's history. In parallel, we developed the programming aspect with the reception and exchange of shows from national structures, thus offering the region the possibility of accessing a multiplicity of modern and diversified artistic currents.
